What's your Spirit to MP5 ratio?

I've finally gotten Regenfu to work for me. I'm looking forward to it tracking the FSR time spent during particular fights. Not only will it give me a gauge to work on staying out of the FSR, it will also tell me how to itemize.

How you ask? Well let me explain.

Mana regenerates from both spirit and mana per 5, right? Right. Now you can only have so much of each. Blizzard considers 5 Spirit to be equal to 2 Mana per 5 for itemization's sake (think chest enchants...6 mana per 5 or 15 Spirit.) Why? How did they come up with this? Did they guess?

My thoughts are that they carefully calculated it based on how much time the usual healer spent in the FSR.

MATH TIME!

If you spent 100% of your time in the FSR, how much regen would spirit and mana per 5 add? If you're a priest with Meditation, you would need 10.6666 Spirit to gain 1 mana per 5. This means that 32 Spirit would be worth 3 mana per 5. Notice that in this case, you would want NO SPIRIT. Because if you had 32 Spirit, you may as well get the equivalent of that in mana per 5 according to Blizzard (32 Spirit = 13ish mana per 5).

If you spent 0% of your time in the FSR, how much regen would spirit and mana per 5 add? Again if you're a priest, you would get need 1.6 Spirit to gain 1 mana per 5. This means that 8 Spirit would be worth 5 mana per 5. In this case, you would want NO MANA PER 5. This is because the 5 mana per 5 that would give you the same as 8 Spirit, is worth around 13 Spirit instead.

So what does this mean for me?
With 15 Spirit replacing 6 mana per 5 on the itemization scale, we can figure out how much time the average priest spends in the FSR. 15 Spirit gives you 1.40625 mana per 5 in the FSR, and 9.375 mana per 5 in the FSR. Now we have to figure out what percent X in the FSR totals to 6 mana per 5. The following equation if you will: X*1.40625 + (1-X)*9.375 = 6

If you solve that equation, you find that X = 42.4%. If you are spending 42.4% of your time in the FSR, then the normal itemization applies for you. 15 Spirit is indeed equal to 6 mana per 5.

So what if you aren't?
The correlation itself is easy. If you spend more than 42.4% of your time in the FSR, then 15 Spirit <> 6 mana per 5.

It isn't very hard to figure out your spirit to MP5 ratio if you know your % time in FSR. I'll post this formula as soon as I do it. Unfortunately I'm on my way out the door. More on this subject later.

Excellent analysis Trystery. There is one factor that -does- play a part though and I don't know if it can be properly quantified. Innervate is more effective if you have more spirit. Cut it down to far and that innervate does very little (innervate a paladin some time and laugh at the results).

It's not a deciding factor mind you, but I'd definitely consider it assuming you routinely have a druid around to perform an innervate upon you during intensive healing.
